For my practice problem, I chose the lack of a mentoring program for new nurses in the cardiovascular ICU. The concept of mentoring is not new in nursing; nurses have been taking novices under their wings since Florence Nightingale’s time. However, it is set to be the key to the difference between staying and leaving for nursing staff (Knowels, 2020). Nursing turnover significantly impacts our CVICU unit and greatly impacts hospitals’ profit margins and patient care. The benefits of a mentoring program for new graduate nurses is well defined in the literature. Successful mentoring contributes to professional growth, increased confidence in practice, improved quality/patient outcomes, and as you also noted, a decrease in nursing turnover. Hildegard Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal relations which built upon Sullivan’s work but has a nursing focus. Peplau’s theory supports the interpersonal phase of the mentoring relationship based upon the concept of a nurse-patient therapeutic relation (orientation, identification, exploration, resolution) which can be applied to a mentor/mentee relationship. attached is the rubric.References: Knowles, S. Introduction: In details, describe the middle range theory you have chosen and discuss how it relates to a practice problem you have identified in a particular nursing environment of your choice. Give a brief background of the theorist including the paradigmatic origins of the theory. 2. Define important/major concepts in the theory and discuss how the concepts are related to one another. 3. Elaborate on how the theorist drew relationships among concepts and describe how those relationships are of interest to nursing. Address how the theory is being used in nursing literature and provide evidence from the literature to support your claim.8ptsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeB.
